It’s not all exams!
In your first three years, training consists of three elements – professional exams, internal courses and on-the-job experience.
Exam training is provided by specialist tutors in external colleges. During the year you will spend several one- or two-week blocks of time at college in preparation for the actual exams. You will also be expected to put in enough private study to ensure you pass all these exams at your first attempt. Moore Stephens provides comprehensive study support for either the ICAEW or ICAS exams.
Our internal courses are delivered by specialists from both within and outside the firm. They provide an excellent opportunity to develop your client skills and network with other professionals.
Your on-the-job training is not only the most interesting part of your three years but is also the element that makes your three years with Moore Stephens different from three years with any other firm. Although you start off with the basics, it will not be long before you are conversant with most aspects of our work and our clients’ businesses. After the one-year mark, you will be expected to coach new trainees and show them the ropes. It really is a steep learning curve. After you qualify, the training continues. Whether you choose to specialise or generalise, you need to keep your technical knowledge up to date. If you want to pursue further professional qualifications in tax, insolvency or audit, we will support you.
What we are looking for
Since we are looking to recruit individuals with the potential to develop into general business advisers rather than just number crunchers, we obviously place emphasis on strong personal skills and keen commercial awareness. Having said that, we do not want to recruit trainees who are unlikely to pass their professional exams first time.
Based on experience we know that the better someone does at school and university, the better they will do in their professional exams. We therefore expect you to have racked up at least 24 UCAS points (300 on the new tariff) and be expecting an upper second class degree.

A steep learning curve: that’s what everyone told me I would face in my first three years at Moore Stephens and they certainly weren’t wrong.
