At IPL, we recognise the importance of training which, combined with the hands-on experience you will gain on projects, provides the necessary knowledge and skills to drive your career development. Training begins when you arrive at IPL and continues throughout your career.
Training Structure
When you join IPL, you, with other graduate joiners, will undertake a three week induction training course. This gets you up-to-speed with the methodologies, standards, programming languages and testing techniques you will need, and provides you with the opportunity to interact with your peers. During this course your initial capabilities will be assessed by the trainers working with you, following which you will be placed on a suitable project where you will continue to be supervised and mentored.
As you progress through IPL’s grade system, you will follow a comprehensive structured training programme. The grade system is aligned to the BCS Skill Framework for the Information Age model (SFIAplus) and our training programme is designed to support this. The emphasis is on developing you as a software engineer, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, test and deploy systems. As you gain experience, the training will also include developing team leading and project management skills. You may decide to become a technical specialist, or a business consultant, when training will focus on your chosen career path.
To supplement your software engineering training, there are languages, tools and technology training courses and the opportunity to gain the associated certified engineer qualifications. This specific training is usually scheduled shortly before you will be using the expertise on a project, reinforcing the training and allowing new technical skills to be developed to their full potential.
Career Development
Although training courses are important, we also recognise the importance of developing skills through guidance from more experienced colleagues and progressively more challenging assignments. You will be supervised on projects and your work will be reviewed to ensure that the knowledge you have gained from training is being applied effectively.
At the end of each project assignment you will have formal feedback on all aspects of your performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and this will be discussed with your supervisor at a review meeting. Each year, individual performance appraisals are carried out where your performance over the year and your training plan is reviewed, and your future career direction is discussed.
Our aim is to help you to achieve your maximum potential.
