Career History

Erica’s commitment to developing her HR skills and qualifications has played a central role in helping achieve her career goals.

Erica started her HR career in 2002, aged 21, working as an HR administrator for a charity.  She was quickly promoted to HR Officer and decided to enrol on a Certificate in Personnel Practice (CPP) course, at Kingston College. A relative working in HR recommended it as a good practical course and Erica believes that much of the impetus for keeping her motivated was its relevance and application in the workplace. “I found the programme practical and it provided a good overview of people management practice. Erica says, “During the CPP course, Erica became acting HR manager, and 6 months later, on completion of the CPP, was promoted to HR manager.

A Motivated HR Practitioner

Erica was keen to continue developing her role and learning new skills. Following successful completion of the CPP, she went on to study for the Professional Development Scheme (PDS) at Kingston University.

Erica has now completed this qualification and has extended her HR experience with a change of organisation. This move has satisfied her interest in working for a private sector organisation.

What is apparent is the key role that both her former and current employers have played in supporting her PDS studies. “My managers have been very encouraging showing genuine interest in my research work and offering opinions and helpful feedback. They can see that my work on the programme will bring practical benefits to the organisation,” adds Erica.

A Strategic Role

Erica’s new position has given her the opportunity to play a strategic role and develop people management skills in a range of areas. She sees the CIPD qualification as recognition of her skills and believes it provides a practical career advantage, with the majority of HR vacancies today requesting CIPD-qualified candidates. As a member of CIPD, Erica has access to lots of free information and support for HR practitioners including the CIPD website and research, weekly updates and an employment law helpline. The PDS is not the end of Erica’s studies as her enthusiasm to build her knowledge and experience of HR remains undimmed. Next on the agenda is a Masters degree.
