Name: Rob VivianDegree: MEng Civil Engineering, University of Surrey
Age: 25
Rob first joined Gifford as a placement student between his second and third years at university. He took up a permanent post in June 2006 as a Graduate Engineer in Gifford’s Bridge section.
What attracted you to Gifford?
During my placements I worked on some interesting projects, including the M25 J12-15 widening project, and gained valuable experience from these.
When I graduated I wanted to return to Gifford - there are real opportunities to develop and work on a wide range of projects, the working atmosphere is fantastic and I get to work with some great people.
What skills do you need?
Communication is key to my job, whether discussing ideas with a project manager or liaising with technicians to translate my design sketches into a full set of drawings. My work ranges from preliminary to detailed design, and has included bridge inspection work and report writing.
What training opportunities have you had at Gifford?
I am encouraged to manage my own training and actively seek out opportunities for personal development. My main aim at the moment is to become chartered. I am signed up to an ICE training scheme and Gifford arrange seminars to help me to build up continuing professional development and learn about other Gifford projects.
