Working towards becoming a chartered engineer
Being a global organisation allows us to offer wide exposure to opportunities and choice to graduates looking for a career in engineering. As an FKI graduate you will undertake four six-month projects designed to broaden and deepen your engineering, commercial and management knowledge and skills.
Our Graduate Development Programme is accredited by IET and IMechE.
The projects will allow you to use your current skills and to also offer new challenges to support your professional and personal development. Training objectives relate to professional competences and you will be provided with support and guidance during each project placement.
Further Learning Plans will be developed for those graduates who do not have an MEng qualification.
Mentoring
You will work with a mentor (a professional engineer) who will help to support your development during the Graduate Development Programme, and in your first appointment until you achieve chartered engineer status.
Training workshops and personal development
Professional engineers need to develop a wide variety of skills and to help you with this we offer you a number of training workshops. These include:
- contract law
- intellectual property payments and bonds
- strategic purchasing
- service
- project management
- lean principles.
Interpersonal skills development is key to your future career and we offer training in communication and teamworking.
We also support our graduates in undertaking personal challenge activities such as walking Hadrian’s Wall and The Prince’s Trust Scandinavian Three Peaks Challenge.
Language training
Some of your placements will take you overseas and you may need to learn new language skills. We offer language training to ensure that you have the level of fluency to take advantage of the opportunities provided. You can also undertake assessment against internationally recognised standards.
MBA
After completion of the FKI Graduate Development Programme and 12 months working in an FKI company we offer you an opportunity to pursue an Executive MBA. This is a modular programme covering areas such as international finance, marketing, strategic HR and operations management. It is currently offered through Birmingham University Business School.
