Scottish Investment Operations (SIO) is a trade association representing global investment employers in Scotland. We are tasked with promoting the industry in Scotland and are a vital link between employers and graduates. Visit our dedicated website to apply for jobs and find out much more about the industry and us.
Who we work with
Our member companies are major fund management companies, investment banks and other financial institutions that are based in Scotland or have significant operations here. Our members employ thousands of skilled people around the country and the industry continues to be one of the fastest growing areas of the financial services sector in Scotland. A full list of members is available on our website.
Since our founding we’ve helped an enormous number of graduates begin challenging careers in our industry by educating on the sector and providing links to companies, jobs and training. Last year more than 20,000 job seekers used SIO to get their careers started.
We’ve developed an acclaimed introductory course for new entrants as well as advanced level professional development programmes with the industry’s main examining body, the Securities & Investment Institute.

Types of careers
There are opportunities in a wide range of areas including specialised positions that deal with financial products and markets to accounting, finance and other numerate positions. Like all companies, careers also exist in key areas such as HR, IT, project management and more.
What we look for
Although some positions will require a degree in a numerate discipline, most are open to any degree subject with full training being provided on the job. Employers are particularly interested in your skills and the following are vital for success:
- Positive, can-do attitude
- Strong communication skills
- High standards of accuracy and numeracy
- Problem solving skills
- The capacity to work to strict deadlines
- Work within and contribute to a team
- Take ownership for own work
- PC literacy
Your development
Training and development in the sector is second to none and our member companies invest heavily in building on your knowledge and skills to help you in your role but also to develop your career.
New starts typically begin with an induction programme that covers everything from an overview of the financial markets, the company and what role your job plays in the process. Next comes on the job training and specialised training courses to equip you for the job. With constant product innovations and changes in markets and regulation, you’ll find that you are always challenged to learn about something new.
Most employees will also be supported through a professional development route, which is relevant to their department and role. Many will sit the Securities & Investment Institute exams or other qualifications such as ACCA and CIMA for accountants or CIPD for HR professionals.
Career prospects are good and many graduates will go on to more senior roles within their team or in other areas of the company where they will be encouraged to play an increasing part in the way their firm does business.
Salaries range from company to company and depend on your role but it is unlikely to see much below £20,000 and the opportunity to move towards salaries in the 30’s, 40’s and above is a very real possibility. Don’t forget about other key benefits that make up your overall package such as bonuses, private healthcare and pensions.
