Power Service

After graduating from Loughborough University with a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering, Karen joined Alstom’s Power Service Sector, working in Steam Turbine Technology.

Karen said: “I began on a training plan, completing nine 12-week placements within a range of departments and during this time I spent 10 weeks working on site at a power station. I also completed a graduate development programme attending a number of one and two-day training courses designed to develop managerial ability and non-technical skills.

”Spending time working in different departments provided me with good background knowledge of steam turbine fundamentals along with a strong understanding of certain design methods and processes. I also made a number of useful contacts within the company.”

After three years with Alstom, Karen now provides technical support for refurbishments within Alstom’s in-house workshop and for service work both in the UK and overseas.

She said: “I have been working in my current role for 8 months. I have also gained leadership experience by taking temporary lead of the logistics support group who provide technical support for the spares order process.”

“My role has good variety. I provide technical support for a number of different projects and a range of steam turbine components. I spend time in the factory and also visiting sub-contractors getting ‘hands on’ experience.”

“Colleagues and management throughout the company are very supportive and always willing to offer advice. There are also travel opportunities both in the UK and overseas. I have travelled to a number of power stations to meet customers and investigate service issues and breakdowns.”
