Henderson Chambers: Law - barrister graduate programmes
Henderson Chambers is a leading common law and commercial set.
Chambers has grown steadily over the past 50 years and we now have 39 tenants. Two of our door tenants (Clive Stanbrook QC OBE and Phillip Bentley QC) practice from the Brussels office of the US Law firm McDermott, Will and Emery.
Whilst adhering to traditional values, we are progressive and forward-looking in our business practices and management. We are proud of our friendly atmosphere.
Areas of work
We are recognised by all leading directories as pre-eminent in the field of product liability with ’an unrivalled pedigree’ and as ’a dynasty with an outstanding reputation’. Health and safety litigation is another chambers forte. We are also acknowledged as a leading set in consumer, information technology, employment, property, public inquiries, public and personal injury law.
Additional areas of practice include: professional negligence; environmental law; construction; insurance; employment; regulatory and disciplinary law; human rights; family law; landlord and tenant; sport; and EU law.
Leading cases
Members of Chambers, past and present, have appeared in many of the leading common law cases of the past 25 years. These include such milestones in tort as Murphy v Brentwood (on both sides), Harris v Wyre Forest District Council and Cambridge Water v Eastern Counties. We have become the ’automatic choice for defending multi-party claims’ (The Legal 500), including mass tort claims such as Benzodiazapenes, Tobacco, Afrika v Cape Plc and MMR and multi-party commercial claims such as the Benzene litigation. Our extensive Inquiry work includes Clapham, Southall, Marchioness, Ladbroke Grove and Shipman.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking to recruit personable candidates of high academic calibre, motivation and determination, and achievement outside academic studies.
Applicants are usually expected to have a first or upper second class degree. We will take into account both academic and non-academic achievements and any special obstacles that candidates have had to overcome.
Both the barristers and the clerks in Chambers are fully committed to upholding the principle of equal opportunity. Selection is made on the basis of merit.
Pupillage
- Pupils will observe a variety of work in tribunals at all levels and, in their second six months, they will have plenty of opportunities to develop their skills as advocates.
- Pupils are offered the opportunity to work in Brussels for four weeks to experience European practice at first hand.
- We expect our pupils to enjoy their pupillage – as well as to learn.
- Over the last three years three (out of four) of our pupils have been taken on as tenants.
