Manufacturing Systems Engineer

Name: Iolo Slaymaker
University attended: Nottingham Trent University
Degree obtained: BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering

‘You are truly valued and recognised as an integral part of the engineering team, not “just another graduate”.’

Iolo Slaymaker joined Delphi in the position of Graduate Manufacturing Systems Engineer at our Stonehouse site, Gloucestershire after graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering.

I spent my first eight months working directly for the Plant Manager (also my mentor). I was given specific projects that improved the function of the business as a whole. One project was reviewing the pay scale structure of all production employees. This position gave me a fascinating insight into and knowledge of the workings of the company, to see at first hand how a large manufacturing company functions and how strategic decisions affect the business. As a ‘finale’ to this placement I acted as a Group Manager for three weeks, responsible for the running of one of the production areas in the company and in charge of over 30 personnel.

For my next placement I moved into one of the three Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MSE) teams. My first project in this role was to re-layout a complete production area, assess the capacity uplift and capital expenditure requirements for the next three years and specify/purchase all new plant and machinery.

Responsibility

One thing that strikes you at Delphi is the level of responsibility you are given: you are the sole project owner, specifying and purchasing key production equipment. You are truly valued and recognised as an integral part of the engineering team, not ‘just another graduate’. It certainly gives you a buzz the day you see your plant being delivered and installed on site with all the hallmarks of your personal work. In two years, I’ve personally purchased plant and machinery totalling over £1.5m, travelled all over Europe and worked on very high-profile projects.

A constant challenge

Since then I have been promoted to Principal MSE – Operational Support, where I have responsibility for three other engineers. My role in MSE is challenging and intellectually exciting. Working in a sub-micron manufacturing environment, you never find yourself in a position of comfort. You are constantly driven to improve the business, and your suggestions are taken on board.

If working for a fast-paced company with cutting-edge technologies is for you, then look no further…
