We work alongside architects, clients and other specialists to design systems which balance occupant comfort and enjoyment with the responsible use of resources.
We provide consultation and design of effective, innovative solutions to contemporary issues of energy-use in the built environment.
What we look for in a Graduate
The Practice was founded in 1966 by Max Fordham with the aim of devoting the same level of detail and attention to engineering a building’s comfort that an architect devotes to its design. To maintain this ethos in the work the practice does, we look to recruit self-starting science, engineering or mathematics graduates, with a good understanding of physics and a genuine interest in design and resolving issues surrounding the servicing of a building.
We require a minimum grade of 2:1 or above, or the equivalent.
We consider applications for all three offices; London, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Start dates are ongoing and salary expectations for the first year are between £20,000 and £24,000. Partnership with profit-share maybe offered after 4 years.
What graduates are expected to do
Buildings are responsible for over half the carbon emissions produced by our society, we aim to minimise this impact on the environment by making use of passive design. Graduates will contribute to all areas of the wide ranging projects we undertake. The work is varied, interesting and demanding. Engineers are encouraged to generate and develop their own ideas and to handle a wide range of technical issues. They are expected to produce and communicate appropriate designs that match the aesthetic aspirations of the architect and then manage the building contracts to install their designs.
Training and Development
Engineers work in project teams and are trained by senior engineers on the job and through seminars to be proficient in all aspects of the design and contract work of the building programme. Each Graduate is assigned a mentor and Graduates are encouraged to work towards Chartered Engineer Status.
Opportunities are also offered in teaching, attending and speaking at conferences, and participation in the engineering community. Over recent years the practice has help to design and shape some of the most significant building projects around the UK and in major European cities, members of the practice have also produced several successful books, see www.maxfordham.com for more details on our experience.
