Oxford Institute of Legal Practice – organisation profile

The Oxford Institute of Legal Practice (OXILP) is a centre for vocational legal education established jointly by the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University. In 2007 OXILP’s LPC received the top rating of Commendable Practice across all Law Society Assessment areas.

Legal Practice Course (Full Time/ Part Time)

All OXILP’s teaching staff are qualified solicitors and barristers, with good relevant experience of practice. Most teaching takes place in small group sessions with an emphasis on interactive, collaborative learning. IT is integrated into the LPC curriculum to support rather than replace teaching, thus all lectures are live, with podcasts available as an additional resource.

OXILP’s LPC is suitable for students who intend to practise in commercial law firms both regionally and in London and also for those who intend to practise in non-commercial areas such as family law or private client. Alumni have secured training contracts in a wide range of firms, including London firms such as Ashursts, Denton Hall, Jones Day, White & Case and Farrar & Co, regional firms such as Burges Salmon and Wragge & Co., local Oxford firms such as Morgan Cole, Blake Lapthorn Tarlo Lyons and Darbys and non-commercial firms such as Hodge, Jones & Allen and Leigh Day & Co.

Our relatively small size allows us to foster a friendly, close-knit environment where students feel like individuals. We have a well-established personal tutorial system and careers service, under which students have their own personal careers tutor at OXILP as well as access to Oxford University Careers Service. We also operate an award winning student pro bono scheme. OXILP has extensive recreational and competitive sporting programmes (we have a boat on the river for novice and experienced crew), alongside an active social agenda.

LLB (Hons) (Legal Practice)

Non-law graduates who successfully complete both the Graduate Diploma in Law (CPE) at Oxford Brookes University and the LPC at OXILP are eligible to receive an LLB (Hons) (Legal Practice) from Oxford Brookes University.

Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT)

OXILP also runs the QLTT, allowing overseas lawyers to qualify to practise as solicitors in England and Wales. We hold test sitting three times a year in Oxford and, with partner organisations, in the USA and India. Flexibility is the key to our QLTT offering, and students can choose to purchase study guides from us prior to sitting the test, or to sit the test following independent study or to take our Oxford QLTT Summer School with tuition and revision sessions.
