The London Stock Exchange stands at the heart of the most international capital market in the world.

Our markets are central to future economic growth and prosperity and attract companies and investors from all over the world. Today the Exchange is the world’s most international stock market with over 700 overseas companies from over 70 countries quoted in London. It has consolidated this position in the last two years, having attracted 202 international companies which raised nearly £30 bn between them. These figures include international companies on AIM, the London Stock Exchange’s growth market, which has grown to become the world’s most successful market for small and medium sized enterprises with more than 1650 companies in June 2008.

On 1 October 2007 the London Stock Exchange plc merged with Borsa Italiana S.p.A. to create the leading diversified Exchange in Europe and a platform for additional strong growth on a European and global scale. The combined group is Europe’s leading equities business, with 47% of the FTSEurofirst 100 by market capitalisation and with the most liquid order book by value and volume traded

In December 2007 the London Stock Exchange Group joined the FTSE 100 for the first time
