Civil Service Fast Stream – Government Economic Service (GES)

Where will your ideas end up?
In the nation’s schools? At the heart of the prison system? As part of an all-important parliament bill? These are just some of the places they can end up when you’re on the Civil Service Economists’ Fast Stream.

The Government Economic Service is involved in all aspects of government policy, delving into the details to establish the economic pros and cons behind some of the biggest issues facing society today. So as a Fast Streamer, your work will have a visible impact on life throughout the UK beyond.

You’ll take on a series of postings, each lasting 12 to 18 months. These usually involve providing advice to government departments, and could mean anything from assessing the impact of the minimum wage to looking for efficiency gains in the NHS.

We also have opportunities for economists within the Diplomatic Service, where you will be able to apply your economic skills to international macroeconomics, trade, financial markets and development.

Most posts are in London but we may also have vacancies in Birmingham, Liverpool, Newport, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Sheffield.

The minimum requirement is a 2:1 degree or postgraduate degree in economics. We’ll also accept a joint degree if 50% of the course modules are in economics.

Organisation summary
Today’s Civil Service is an increasingly streamlined, multi-million pound business where 500,000 motivated people impact on every aspect of life in Britain to deliver first-class services to the public.

The Government Economic Service, the largest recruiter of economists in the UK, performs a vital function within the Civil Service. It provides expert economic advice for the UK’s government, businesses and people.
