Buro Happold is proud to be one of the first organisations in the construction industry to be awarded – and retain – the International Investor in People accreditation, recognising our strong commitment to our people. We will give you the responsibility you want while supporting and encouraging your professional and personal development.
Graduate induction
Each year all new graduates are invited to a multi-disciplinary design event that introduces you to the collaborative approach to design that is integral to the way Buro Happold works to achieve excellence. This is a fun and stimulating week-long event which will also enable you to form close links with other graduate engineers from across the practice. A year later another event is held to help you further develop your multi–disciplinary design skills. Many of our senior staff and partners are involved in these events.
In addition to these events that support our company-wide graduate network, local graduate support is provided by a network of ‘buddies’ and mentors and by local graduate representatives, who make sure that each office hosts graduate social events to welcome new graduates and give them opportunities to develop supportive relationships.
Working towards chartership
Professional accreditation support is also a key part of graduate development and Buro Happold is committed to supporting our people in achieving chartered engineer status. The company has developed training programmes which are accredited with the ICE, IStructE, CIBSE, IET and IFE and will support you towards achieving professional qualifications offered by other relevant professional bodies.
The Buro Happold schemes have been designed to be as user friendly as possible to help you achieve all the training objectives and therefore apply for chartered status through your normal working role in a lower than industry-average timescale. You will have a mentor who will help you on your route to chartership and we also have a dedicated member of the Learning and Development team experienced in guiding people through the process.
Other career development opportunities
Buro Happold actively encourages graduates to spend time in different teams all around the world through its internal secondment process. This process gives you the opportunity to explore other disciplines, identify your interests and establish your own specialist knowledge, while gaining a broader understanding of engineering design consultancy.
As your career progresses we offer further strategic development programmes to help you develop and enhance your interpersonal, management and technical skills.
We routinely conduct project completion debriefings to uncover and pass on the lessons that have been learnt. We also hold regular design reviews and workshops enabling senior staff to provide valuable input into project design.
The personal development we offer our people helps the practice deliver technical consultancy of the highest quality while ensuring employees are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
