A key advantage of the Fast-Stream Development Programme is the opportunity for accelerated promotion.
Structure
Training and development is tailored to the needs of individuals but will include on-the-job training, with ongoing coaching and support plus relevant courses. The training programme varies according to the department you join, but typically there is around 15 days’ off-the-job training a year, especially in the first two years. This will include residential courses, conferences and seminars.
Skills development
Ideally your training will cover a mix of economic, administrative and management skills. The balance will depend on your background and experience. Some departments also provide paid leave to enable those who do not already have one to study for a postgraduate qualification in economics.
Supervision
Your development will be closely monitored by your line manager who will provide on-the-job coaching and will discuss with you, and advise on, training and broader development needs. They will also be responsible for your annual performance appraisal, at which you will together discuss your progress to date and set future targets and objectives.
Career development
Typically you can expect a series of 12–18 month placements in a range of jobs, to gain a breadth of experience. In many departments you can compete for or help select your postings, with advice from managers. You can also move between departments and locations to broaden your experience in a variety of posts.
