With over a thousand economists, the Government Economic Service (GES) is the largest recruiter of economists in the UK.
Joining the GES as a Fast Stream economist will give you the opportunity to work in any of the 30 key Government departments, where you will have a real impact on people’s lives and a direct involvement in the decision-making process.
The Fast Stream is a tailored development programme designed to prepare you for senior Civil Service roles. As a GES economist your career options are effectively unlimited, since government policy can touch on virtually every aspect of life and business. You will be the economics expert – the people you work with probably won’t be. They’ll need to understand complex ideas, in-depth analysis and unfamiliar principles – which is why you must have the ability to explain and elucidate your economic advice, whether that’s in front of 50 people or a Minister.
Continuing professional development (CPD)
The GES actively encourages CPD. Chief Economists have agreed that the guideline for CPD is 100 hours per year. At least 50 hours of this must be on economics. These hours will be exceeded during periods of more intensive development e.g. induction and full-time courses. Some departments also provide paid leave for those who wish to study for a postgraduate qualification in economics.
Supervision
Your development will also be closely monitored by your line manager, who will provide on-the-job coaching and will discuss with you, and advise on, training and broader development.
Salary and benefits
Starting salaries vary between departments. In central London the average starting salary is likely to be in the region of £25,000. Higher starting pay is usually available for additional relevant qualifications or experience.
The application process
Applications must be made online at www.ges.gov.uk
Equal Opportunities
We believe that the most effective Civil Service is one that fully reflects the society it serves. That is why we select on ability alone and all applications are treated on merit.
