How is training structured?
Training and development is geared towards achieving the chartered or professional status relevant to your business area. Our Managed Professional Development Schemes (MPDS) are designed to give you all the support you need towards this, offering a structured programme that enables you to become more rounded as an individual.
What does the induction programme involve?
All of our new graduates attend an induction tailored specifically to the area of the business you join. This offers an opportunity to get to know each other while learning about the business. You’ll also take part in a one-day Corporate Induction programme, further graduate development events and in some cases, local office inductions.
What type of on-the-job training do you offer?
Upon joining, you’ll be assigned a mentor who will take responsibility for assessing your professional training needs. These will be met by design experience at the desk, as well as broader involvement in projects and site experience to develop commercial, financial, project and people management capabilities.
What type of supervision should I expect while training?
Your mentor will be instrumental in guiding your professional development in line with the requirements of professional institutions.
How much training is conducted in house and/or by external consultants?
Technical training is conducted through a mix of in-house and external provisions. The majority of non-technical training is undertaken by external consultants either off site or using Atkins facilities. We contract the services of top-flight training organisations such as Cranfield Business School and Warwick University.
How long does training last?
Depending on your capabilities, initial training should take around two years. We expect all of our graduates to be ready to apply for chartered or professional status within five years of joining.
What specific skills does training focus on?
Training will focus on the professional competencies required by your own particular professional institution, plus commercial, financial, project management, self-awareness and people management skills.
What training opportunities do you offer overseas?
There are no formal training opportunities in place but we do encourage our graduates to take up overseas placements as and when they arise.
Do you offer training leading to recognised qualifications?
Yes. We will support you towards achieving professional qualifications offered by a relevant professional body. These include: MICOB, ICE, IMechE, RICS, RIBA, IET and IWEM.
