National Grid is an international electricity and gas company primarily based in the UK and the northeastern US. We play a vital role in delivering gas and electricity to millions of people in a safe, efficient and reliable manner.
This is the power of action
This is the largest utility in the UK and second largest in the US. This is the business with enough electricity wires and gas pipes to travel over 65 times around the world's equator. This is National Grid. We're 27,000 employees strong and responsible for delivering energy to millions of people across Great Britain and the Northeast US.
The scale of our operation is breathtaking. To deliver the energy needed by our customers, we operate 7,200 kilometres of overhead electricity lines in England and Wales and 7,400 kilometres of high pressure gas pipelines across Great Britain. Our local distribution networks deliver gas to around 11 million consumers in an area covering approximately a quarter of Great Britain.
On the other side of the Atlantic, people rely on us too - 3.4 million electricity customers across a 116,000 circuit kilometre network, to be precise, not to mention another 3.5 million American gas customers serviced by our gas distribution network.
We are committed to being an innovative leader in energy management and to safeguarding our global environment for future generations. We have recently extended our carbon reductions target by 2050 from 60% to 80% and we have already reduced our 1990 level by 35%.
We are also working with geo-pressure company, 2OC, in a new venture called Blue-NG to use a new form of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant fuelled by sustainably grown energy crops. Blue-NG will use vegetable oil to fuel its engines and only use sustainably sourced crops.
Additionally, we are investing £50 million in creating an entirely new venture that captures the pressure reductions in our gas pipelines to produce energy. By using this entirely "green" method, we expect all our operations to be powered 100% from renewable sources from 2010!
This is the power of action.
This is your future
We don't just concentrate on our physical network; our talent network is equally important to us. On average, we recruit 30 people each year into our graduate development programme, where you can get all the development you need for an exceptional career.
We're looking for people to join our engineering or commercial scheme. You can be sure of substantial placements and real responsibility. And with a line manager, HR professionals, mentor and graduate 'buddy' there to help you, there's a feeling of real security. You'll also receive a starting salary of c. £22,500 - £23,500, a £2,000 welcome payment, accommodation allowance, pension scheme, 25 days' annual leave plus statutory holidays and a flexible benefits package.
