Organisation
Raleigh is a youth and education charity. Since 1984 we have inspired over 30,000 people from all walks of life, nationalities and ages to get out there and rise to the challenges of life on expedition. How can you join Raleigh?
17-24 year olds join us as venturers, applying directly, as part of a break during education, travelling or career, or referred to us from youth agency partnerships, and youth membership organisations in both the UK and host countries. Volunteers aged between 25 and 75 join us as volunteer managers, to help run expeditions either on the project site or at field base (roles include project managers, mountain leaders, medics, photographers, logistics, finance managers, administrators and communications officers).
Overseas expeditions
We run programmes in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. Our expeditions are a challenging, but extremely rewarding combination of sustainable community, environmental and adventure projects.
Our permanent in country staff build long-term, sustainable partnerships with our project partners and other stakeholders to ensure the projects all projects directly benefit the lives of each community and are genuinely needed and sustainable.
Expedition length
We run unique, different length expeditions throughout the year to fit your study or work patterns. Choose from 4, 5, 7 or 10 weeks. Volunteer managers receive training in country and therefore commitment is an additional 2-3 weeks.
Benefits
• We work on worthwhile and sustainable projects – having a permanent presence in all our host countries we know what is needed to really make a positive contribution there
• We access remote areas – we often work in national parks and obtain special permits to trek remote landscapes you couldn’t access travelling alone
• We’re safe – safety is our utmost priority and we ensure all volunteers receive comprehensive safety training
• We encourage volunteers to be all they can be – our expeditions enable a diverse range of volunteers, including disadvantaged youths and host country participants to develop key skills for life and employment
• We are a charity – all monies raised cover the cost of the expeditions including the development and materials for projects, as well as providing bursaries for host country participants and disadvantaged young people
• We are for life – volunteers are able to share their memories, experiences and skills with a growing network of over 30,000 like-minded people who want to keep contributing to society on their return
’Raleigh has given me time to identify what I really want out of life while at the same time giving something back in a worthwhile experience’. Andrew White, Costa Rica & Nicaragua
