Your Development
Meeting the challenges of a changing, growing, global business requires people who can take early responsibility and deliver high personal performance.
To help you achieve this we will share with you the responsibility for your development, which will include formal training, guidance, support and wide-ranging experience.
Experience
We believe you should experience the challenges and excitement of a real role at an early stage in your career, since this makes a vital contribution to your development. Each year Pilkington recruits graduates for specific functions within the various businesses. These functions are described more fully in the Functional Areas section.
As your career develops, you will learn more about where your personal strengths and interests lie and you may wish to consider changing functions.
Some businesses offer from the outset, the opportunity to gain wider based commercial management experience. This involves spending the first 12-18 months in a number of different functions within the commercial side of the business. You will then take on a longer-term role in a preferred functional area.
Formal Training
All graduates will have the opportunity to participate in basic management training during their first 24 months with the Group.
The training required to provide you with the skills to perform roles safely and to a high standard will be available on a continuing basis as your career advances.
Where applicable, you will be encouraged to pursue membership of a professional institution. For example, UK graduates following a career in finance pursue studies leading to membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Engineers seek chartered membership of the relevant engineering institution and those in HR study for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualification.
In some areas it is possible to follow a course of study leading to a management qualification. For those who wish and have the ability, there are opportunities to take an MBA through part-time study once sufficient working experience has been gained.
The Group also runs a series of well-established, international management development programmes. These operate across the businesses at a number of different levels and you will be able to participate as you reach various stages in your career. Focusing on general management and leadership development, these programmes provide the opportunity to meet and work with colleagues from all parts of the Group around the world.
Support
You will be encouraged and helped to maintain a personal development plan which will provide a focus on your continuing formal training and career experience needs. Regular performance and development reviews with your line manager ensure your progress is appraised and necessary adjustments are made to your development plan. This maintains alignment between your development needs, the demands of your role and the overall business objectives.
Further support is provided in the form of an experienced manager who will act as your mentor to counsel and advise you as your career develops over the early years.
If you think you can turn development like this into high personal performance, we would like to hear from you.
