Pilkington offer a number of summer and 12 month placements in science and engineering, these are based either at our European Technical Centre, Lathom, Nr Ormskirk, Lancashire or at one of our manufacturing sites in St Helens, Merseyside.


Engineering Summer Placements

A number of summer vacation placements are available for undergraduates within the following areas:
• Mechanical
• Electrical/Electronic
• Chemical
• Civil
• General Engineering


Pilkington trains and develops undergraduates and graduates on its Engineering Development Scheme which is accredited by the IET and IMECHE.

Duration / Timing
Placements are generally for a minimum of 8 weeks, starting in either June or July 2008.

Placement Activities and Past Projects
Each placement will provide an opportunity to carry out project work in a manufacturing, research, development or project engineering function. During the placement you will be appointed a supervisor, who will complete a review with you at the end of the placement.

Past projects include:
• Development of an image processing system to improve process control
• Implementation of new packaging technology to improve safety in manufacturing
• Commissioning of new electrical equipment on an overseas capital project

The Person
To be eligible to apply for a placement you should:
• Have 3 A Levels grades A-C, including Mathematics and Physics or equivalent
• Be studying for a BEng or MEng accredited by the IMechE or IET
• Be analytical, informative and results oriented
• Have career ambitions to work within a manufacturing industry
• AutoCAD skills an advantage
• Previous relevant work experience preferred

Science Support Summer & 12 Month Placements

A number of summer placements and 12 Month Placement exist within Science Support based at our European Technical Centre in Lathom, Nr Ormskirk. We generally look for students studying Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science, in addition for the 12 month placements we look for students require a placement as part of their degree.

The summer placements commence June/July for a minimum period of 8 weeks whilst the 12 Month Placements commence in September.

The placements represent an excellent opportunity for highly motivated individuals looking to gain experience within this field.
