Hello.
A couple of weeks ago I attended the first assessment for TfL and was told that I had got through.
I now have the last round to look forward to (of which they haven't told me the date yet) and was just wondering if anyone had been through this yet and what it entailed.
I have applied for the Transport Planning: Surface Transport scheme.
Please feel free to ask questions about the other stages if you have recently applied and I will try and help.
I have not found much about the TfL graduate assessment on the internet so I would like to assist now I experience most of it!

I applied to the Information Management Scheme and was invited to take the situational judgement tests online. That was 4 weeks ago and my account still says they are being processed.
Not very impressed with their level of communication.

That's strange, they sent mine pretty much straight away.
Have you tried ringing them?

Hi Andrew60!
I've just had my telephone conversation and been accepted for the first assessment day.
I'm aiming for procurement and contracts scheme.
Any information regarding your experience in your assessment day would be much appreciated

Hi Maria,
When is your first assessment?
I am still waiting for them to tell me when my final one is.
They day is fairly straight forward and last about 5 intense hours. Make sure you eat something beforehand cause all you're offered is tea and biscuits!
The first thing I had to do was the fast track exercise, which is a series of puzzles/tests looking to see how you can notice patterns with data etc. Everyone I was with said how they found it difficult, which i mainly agreed with but it's certainly not impossible or anything. Make sure you don't spend too long on each set of cards!
The second part was an interview, which is just one on one with someone from Reed. This was questions relating to those competencies on the TfL website. They were a bit tricky E.g. Tell me about a time you had to help someone feel included and had to overcome a barrier to do this!
It's quite relaxed though, just being you and one interviewer.
The last exercise was the group exercise (there were 5 of us). We had to read through some info about a fictitious project that TfL were doing. We all represented someone arguing for and against aspects of the project and we all had to come to an agreement for recommendations to the directors of TfL. You have about 10 minutes to read through the info you are given (Each person is given different info based upon which person they were representing. I was from the Cycling Association for example and it affected me in a different way to a motorist etc). Read quickly as you will have to remember what points you need to bring up, and right down EVERYTHING that is said as you will have to write up a summary at the end.
I've actually been pretty brief, so any more questions lemme know and I will try my best, cause I remember what little info I could find when I was going to my first assessment day.
Good Luck!

Thanks Andrew! I really appreciate the information provided.
My phone interview was on the 6th of March, however, I am still waiting to be called for my assessment day. They told me that everything was fully booked until April.
You should be confident about your last stage.
Good luck and we keep in touch about new developments.
Maria

Hi there
I had my final stage interview a few weeks back after waiting since december when I had the fist round assesment day.
My final interview involved a presentation (5mins + 15mins Q&A) on a technical topic they supplied to my 5 days before the interview. Then the interview lasted a little over an hour. Mainly competency based questions but there were a handful of technical questions based on the role. That was the morning, we had lunch and then in the afternoon I was given a tour of Baker Street and behind the scenes. It was really interesting stuff. This will probably not be the case with all areas as the final interviews are managers of the section you will work in and one HR rep. There were only two of us on the final stage but i think that was due to them being through thoughout the selection process. There are so many stages.
I found TfL's communications fantastic but Reed was a bit of a strange one.
They are really friendly, relax and you'll be fine. Good luck

Hi Andrew20 Thanks a lot for replying.
May I ask whether or not you got the job? You don't have to answer that though of course. And also what scheme did you apply for?
The presentation sounds fine, but I am slightly concerned about the competency based questions. Were they similar to the ones that were asked in the first assessment stage? I can't even imagine what technical questions they will ask me, I didn't cover anything to do with transport in my degree. Were they like numeracy/problem questions?
And yes, Reed are rubbish.
Thanks for your help! Any other info you can remember would be great!

I applied to an engineering scheme thats all I want to say.
I found the presentation difficult as it was on a topic I had never studied and was fairly technical. The other candidates had the same topic.
The 3/4 technical questions were as they say technical questions...the managers steer you in the right direction and give you time to work it out if you aren't sure. If you don't know tell them and they'll see if you can work it out yourself if they help you out. They are not mathmatical and covered a few areas I have never been taught or studied so a bit of thinking on you feet can be needed. They are looking for how you attempt to answer as much as if you know the spot on, encyclopedia definition of the answer. Same as many other interviews really.
The competency based questions were similar to the first round but there were more of them and more detail was required. They covered 5/6 of the topics on this page...
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/microsites/graduates/who_we_look_for.asp
Usually starting with "Can you tell us of a time when you showed...." or "Have you ever had to show [quality], when was it and what did you do"
Use the simple template of
1) Set the scene
2) What did you (personally, forget about other people for once)
3) What was the outcome
If you do that should be fine.
Further to you performing in the interview...Make sure the job is for you. Ask lots of questions about what you'll be workign on, where you'll work, who with etc. If they dont have the work you want then it's not the job for you. I hope I haven't given too much information away as to make it too easy. It is meant to be challenging but enjoyable. I definately found it both.
You should get chance to talk to previous graduates too. Ask them questions too. Don't forget that it is a two way interview. They have to make an impression on you too.
Now I'll stop sounding like a careers advisor and finish my degree. Good luck to you both.

Maria,
I have just been invited to the first stage assessment centre for the contracts and procurement scheme, but like yourself, they haven't given a date yet, although they did mention that it could be in the early part of May.
Are you aware of how many graduates they are taking on for each scheme, or the contracts and procurement scheme at all?

Yeh, mine is on the same day but in the afternoon, didn't want to wake up too early as I have my last exam ever the day before.
Has anybody received the e-mail containing all the details just yet?
