Students 'not always aware of financial support opportunities'

Potential university students are largely unaware of the financial backing available to them and harbour a lot of misconceptions about the cost of university, an expert has claimed.

Dr Margaret Noble, Greenwich University's Pro-Vice Chancellor, said that those going into higher education should thoroughly explore their financial options such as accommodation and funding.

Research carried out by the university found that 88% of A-level students were unaware of maintenance grants available.

The study also found that 22% thought tuition fees had to be paid upfront at the beginning of every year.

Ms Noble said: 'There are a considerable number of misconceptions about the cost of going to university. There is a lot of help and advice there out but students need help to work through it.'

A report last week by student advice body Push found that the average cost of university is now a record £4,500 a year.
