University towns see property markets boosted by students
Students are doing their bit to keep the property markets in university towns buoyant, according to new research.
The Propertyfinder.com study found that student towns such as Oxford and Southampton dominated the June list of property hotspots for both renters and buyers, with Cambridge the most sought-after destination for house hunters.
It recorded a 25% increase in the number of tenants looking for a property in Cambridge in the last month alone, while 16 of the top 20 towns for rental demand in June are also home to universities. -

Rent prices affect university choices

New research suggests that rent prices are playing an important part in deciding where people apply to university.
Accommodation for Students found that rental costs now account for more than 40% of a student's weekly budget, making it their biggest cost.
For those choosing to study in the capital that figure rises to 50%, with students paying £102 a week on average for their London accommodation, excluding bills. -

IT's dull image deters undergraduates
Many students are put off a career in the IT industry because they perceive it as 'boring', new research suggests, even though they believe it offers good job prospects.
In the CRAC: The Career Development Organisation survey of 2,000 undergraduates, 60% of non-computing students cited 'boring work' as the main reason why they would not look for a career in the sector.
However, the poll also revealed a variation in male and female attitudes, with men being significantly more willing to consider working in IT than women.
