University awarded for environmental awareness
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) was today (June 18th) recognised as the most environmentally-friendly university in the People and Planet Green League published by Times Higher Education.
The institution jumped 18 places on its entry last year after undertaking a series of initiatives aimed at increasing sustainability, managing waste and reducing carbon emissions.
Commenting on the achievement, NTU Environment Officer Grant Anderson said: 'It's fantastic that we've been named as the number one green university, but we've got lots more ideas to put in place that will make us even greener!'
Almost one-half of the institution's waste currently gets recycled, with plans to extend a contract to ensure food and organic refuse is removed for composting
The university has also secured £1m to invest in new technology through the Revolving Green Fund, which is supported by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
In recent news, students from NTU were given a national prize for a campaign to raise the awareness of drug issues.
