NUT: Teachers need to be tech savvy

Graduates hoping to become the next generation of teachers should ensure they are confident in their technology skills, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has said.

According to the NUT, teachers need to keep up with the technology skills of their pupils and as such, extra training has been given to education professionals.

Christine Blower, Acting General Secretary of the NUT, stated that current teachers have not been able to keep up with the pace of technological changes.

'Teachers have struggled to keep up with children technologically and they do need additional training,' she said.

These training courses, which have used £1.5m of Government money in the past four to five years, have been 'packed out,' she added.

In January, Becta announced a new Next Generation learning campaign which is aimed at encouraging more teachers and schools to use technology as a learning tool in the classroom.
