Health concerns raised over management working hours
Fears over the health of employees have been raised following a new survey that has revealed 89% of managers work longer than their contracted hours.
In a survey by the Chartered Management Institute, it was discovered that the number of managers working overtime had only fallen by 2% in 2008 compared with a poll conducted eight years ago.
The average manager works an extra 40 days a year as a result of working one hour and 18 minutes over contract each day, the research found.
This follows claims from the Trades Union Congress earlier this week, suggesting media professionals undertake the most unpaid overtime.
Director of marketing and corporate affairs at the Chartered Management Institute, Jo Causon, remarked: 'It is clearly having a negative effect and will create longer-term problems for organisations.'
Ms Causon asked why employers are 'ignoring the impact of long hours on the health and performance of their employees.'
