Job security 'improved by new skills'

Workers worried about job security during the current period of economic uncertainty should endeavour to learn new skills, it has been suggested.

According to the Author of Write a Perfect CV in a Weekend and How to Love the Job You Do, Sarah Berry, employees will be in a much stronger position - should a recession hit the UK - if they can offer their boss a wide range of skills.

She advised some workers to change their way of thinking and working, stating: 'You need to train, to gain new skills, be a valuable team member and perhaps be willing to take on things that you wouldn't have done in the past.'

Staff members must make sure they are seen by their employer as 'valuable' to the organisation, Ms Berry said.

The financial services industry has suffered the brunt of problems created by the global economic instability, she added, but warned that the aviation, retail and construction industries could all go the same way.

IT competency and presentation skills as well as numeracy and literacy abilities have all been prioritised by the Learning and Skills Council as the most important things UK workers must develop.
