Overused CV phrases dismissed by employers

Jobseekers have been warned that using cliched words or phrases in their CVs could be putting employers off.

According to new research from TheLadders.co.uk, recruiters view many of the terms commonly used in job applications as lazy and uninspiring, Online Recruitment reports.

Adjectives such as 'reliable', 'self-motivated' and 'resourceful' tend to crop up in the majority of CVs, which can demonstrate a lack of imagination and commitment.

In addition, the employers polled suggested that terms like 'adventurous' or 'seeks a challenge' indicate a candidate gets bored easily.

Sarah Drew, General Manager of the website, said: 'Empty words on your CV are seen as vague claims that disguise faults, what you should be doing is showcasing your achievements.'

'It's incredible how one word can communicate the wrong notion on your CV,' she added.

Using hackneyed phrases is just one trap job hunters typically fall into when they are writing their applications. A recent study from iProfile.org found that candidates typically list their duties on their CV, when what employers are really looking for is details of workplace achievements.
