Employers say engineers need management skills
A number of employers have spoken out about their desire to recruit network engineers that have good business awareness.
Speaking at the Cisco Networkers 2008 conference, Director of IT at Balfour Beatty Rail in Germany, Raymond Mohr, commented that IT professionals should be looking to possess project management skills.
He advised workers in the IT sector to acquire skills 'beyond your own little box,' as network engineering is not just 'about monitoring networks and TCP/IP,' ComputerWeekly reports.
This follows news last week from a Conchango survey reported by Online Recruitment that discovered IT workers are looking for exciting challenges in a new job, rather than improved salaries.
Director of certifications and training at Cisco, Fred Weiller, added that employers want to employ people with technical expertise and business awareness.
'There is a real demand for the network manager who can understand the business requirements and translate those requirements into a network design and delivery plan,' he remarked.
