Top graduates called upon by Brown to teach

The UK's top graduates have been urged by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to teach in some of the most deprived schools in the country.

Following information from Education Data Surveys last week that revealed the number of people embarking on a postgraduate certificate in education course has fallen, in a letter to The Observer, Mr Brown stated that an education offensive is being launched by the Government.

He called upon the talents of top graduates from universities such as Oxford and Cambridge to help teach deprived youngsters.

'To build a world-class teaching workforce, we will shortly announce our proposals for a new master's qualification - and an expansion of Teach First to 400 top graduates this year who will teach in our inner cities,' he stated to the paper.

Through the initiative, these university leavers will spend time teaching and mentoring in these tough inner-city schools, before taking up graduate positions in the City.
