ADD ADVICE TO FAVIT placements
Within the IT sector many large organisations offer work placements or internships. These schemes typically last for two or three months during the summer vacation, or for a full year. Many are open to students who aren’t studying for an IT degree.
IT placements with large employers
Employers offering internships include:
- IT consultancies and service companies, such as Atos Origin and LogicaCMG
- manufacturers and developers, such as RM and Siemens
- end-user companies from a variety of sectors, such as Orange and Shell.
Large blue-chip companies usually offer an intensive, project-based experience and formal feedback. If you are offered a work placement or internship, you will benefit from the insight and experience of working with professional staff in a commercial environment, along with a competitive salary.
IT placements with smaller employers
It is also worth looking out for summer placements at small- and medium-size companies. Although lacking the prestige of big-name firms, these companies often give students a relatively high level of responsibility.
Through Shell Step, for example, students can take part in eight-week summer placements and undertake a real business project for small companies across the country. Salaries are about £185 per week.
Finding an IT internship
Competition is strong and most internships are offered only to penultimate-year students. Employers look for a strong academic track record – Accenture expects 320 UCAS points and at least a potential 2.1 at degree level, for example. Some companies expect specific IT knowledge. However, it’s worth taking the time to present your skills effectively, as the rewards will be worth the effort.
