It’s not always possible to find a formal work-experience programme. If that’s the case, casual work experience may be the answer.
For example, work experience is expected for graduate careers in journalism or teaching, but formal placements are few and far between. Equally, if you miss out on a paid internship in areas such as law or finance, you may decide to look for informal opportunities.

However, getting the right work experience is important as it shows future employers that you’re resourceful and committed. It’s also a good way to gain referees and hear about vacancies.
Finding casual work experience
Casual work-experience placements are rarely advertised, so it’s down to you to find them. And getting in is only half the battle – once you’re there you can expect very low (or no) pay and at times you may have very basic tasks, or very little, to do.
Try to think about any contacts you might have – chances are that you will have more than you think you do. For example, your university careers service will have links with local and national employers. Or maybe you have a cousin, uncle or friend of a friend who works in a sector you’re interested in.
Applying for casual work experience
Making speculative applications is a good way to find casual opportunities. Research small companies in your local area and send them your CV and a targeted covering letter, explaining how you can help them and when you’re available. Or visit your university careers service to see whether any information is available about companies that have offered work experience in the past.
Getting the most out of your casual work placement
As casual work placements aren’t structured, how much you benefit is down to you. Be prepared to help out in any way possible, but if you can, attach yourself to a specific project. Employers will be more impressed if you can say that provided administrative support to Project X, which had a specific impact, than if you just provided support to the whole department.
