Transport managers manage people, equipment and finances involved in the transport of people or goods.
What transport managers do
- plan performance and safety improvements against targets set down by government bodies or senior management
- attend incidents and conduct safety and performance investigations
- negotiate new contracts for clients
- ensure health and safety regulations are adhered to and make recommendations for improvements
- update budgets and ensure estimates take full account of all fixed and ongoing costs
- manage large teams of staff, often in various locations around the country.

Training to be a transport manager
Students graduating in a business-related or management discipline may be at an advantage, but most graduates can apply for a graduate training programme which lasts between one and two years. The programme generally comprises in-company training with mentored, on-the-job training as an important element.
Some companies will sponsor candidates on relevant professional qualifications, such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Salaries for transport managers
Starting salaries range from £20,000 to £30,000. Experienced transport managers can earn in the region of £45,000 and above with company car.
This role provides a stepping stone to senior supply chain roles with salaries above £100,000.
