Network designers design local and wide-area networks.
What network designers do
- analyse the probable flow of traffic and design the network to cope adequately
- ensure that the system’s software optimally routes each call and that different pieces of equipment – such as modems, telephones, computers, routers and printers – are compatible with the network
- analyse faults and problems that arise, and alter the network design to meet new requirements
- consider security systems that may be required.
Key skills for network designers
- understanding of the relevant electronics and software
- responsiveness and adaptability to new situations
- meticulous attention to detail
- logical approach, good problem-solving skills and the ability to analyse complex situations
- communication skills
- ability to liaise with network managers to diagnose problems and iron out faults.
Training to be a network designer
Training is mostly on the job, although there are some relevant diploma and master’s degree courses.
Salaries for network designers
New trainees are typically paid in the range of £20,000 to £24,000.
