ADD ADVICE TO FAVRadio frequency engineer
Radio frequency (RF) engineers design, build and test equipment that generates radio frequency and microwave signals, plus associated transmission and detection systems. Modern designs are usually realised on, multilayer printed circuit boards with surface-mounted components.
What RF engineers do
- investigate alternative design approaches to meet a particular specification (designs may include the use of monolithic integrated circuits or be based on discrete devices)
- assess and deal with thermal and heat dissipation issues
- work with telecommunications and software engineers to integrate designs into large-scale communication systems.
Key skills for RF engineers
- detailed knowledge of RF engineering and associated design techniques
- analytical approach to problem-solving
- ability to communicate complex ideas to engineers and clients from other disciplines
- good teamworking skills
- ability to liaise with other engineers from development, marketing, customer service and production functions.
Training to be an RF engineer
Trainees usually undergo two years’ training, covering aspects such as design, production, safety and costing, before moving into their first major role.
After four years, applications can be made for chartered or incorporated engineer status.
Salaries for RF engineers
Salaries are in the range of £21,000 to £26,000.
