English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers teach foreign nationals to speak, read and write in English. They work in private language schools, colleges and businesses, either abroad or in the UK.
What EFL teachers do
- frequently use only English as the teaching medium – even with beginners
- work with individuals and small groups, often including different nationalities
- organise and prepare lessons using various materials and activities
- use different teaching aids and often produce their own materials
- help to run social activities and outings
- may run courses in business English for adults
- may organise specialised English courses, eg for academics or medical staff.

Training to be an EFL teacher
Although there are no training requirements, many employers expect teachers to have a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) qualification.
There are many different types of TEFL course available, ranging from intensive weekend courses to distance learning. These can be full or part time, taken in the UK or abroad, and are sometimes followed by a longer diploma course.
Salaries for EFL teachers
Salaries vary considerably between countries, ranging from £20,000 to £25,000 in some regions, less in others. Typical salaries in the UK range from £13,000 to £25,000 in language schools. Lecturer pay rates at colleges may be higher.
