Environmental officers work for large companies, such as those in the chemical, oil and energy industries, who are required to comply with extensive environmental legislation.
What environmental officers do
- assist environmental managers in the execution of their duties
- monitor environmental legislation and other relevant developments through studying reports, attending conferences, etc
- liaise with regulatory authorities and ensure their employer complies with standards
- take appropriate action to minimise waste, meet emission conditions and improve energy efficiency
- assist other staff in environmental awareness programmes.

Training to be an environmental officer
A first degree in biological sciences is essential and any environmental modules studied are welcomed. Training is largely on the job.
The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment offers training courses and qualifications.
Salaries
Starting salaries vary considerably, but are likely to be in the region of £17,000 to £25,000. An environmental manager may command a salary of £40,000 to £80,000.
