Auctioneers typically have specialist knowledge of antiques and fine arts, but may work in other areas, such as property.

What auctioneers do

  • produce auction catalogues and other marketing materials
  • keep abreast of relevant legislation.

Training to be an auctioneer

Many auctioneers start work as a saleroom assistant, clerk, porter or cataloguer. Applicants usually need a relevant degree, for example in fine art or history of art.

Most auctioneers achieve chartered surveyor status through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The major auction houses, Christie’s and Sotheby’s, run a variety of part-time and full-time courses.

Salaries for auctioneers

Salaries vary, but usually start at around £18,500 and can rise to £40,000 or more.
