- give evidence in tax courts
- negotiate settlements between HM Revenue & Customs and taxpayers
- may consider policy options and make recommendations about tax law to the UK Government
- ensure all employers meet national minimum-wage requirements
- implement new tax credits for working families and the disabled.

Training to be a tax inspector
Entry is either via the Civil Service Fast Stream or the HM Revenue & Customs Talent Recruitment Programme.
Taking around four years to complete, this modular training programme focuses on the compliance side of the business. It combines formal training in the form of tutor-led sessions, self study and office work.
There are also several exams and a practical assessment of office work. The aim is to lead to a senior management role within five years.
