Campaign officers develop and manage charity campaigns with the goal of either raising money or awareness of an issue. This includes planning their schedule and progression.
What campaign officers do
- recruit, brief and manage staff and/or volunteers to assist with campaign administration
- identify and cultivate potential individuals who can become successful advocates of the campaign, perhaps as supporters or case studies
- raise awareness among politicians and key decision makers
- approach and gain the agreement of a suitable celebrity to be the figurehead for specific campaigns
- negotiate favourable rates with local and national media for publicising the campaign
- prepare campaign materials which may include documentation, media advertising, SMS messages and a dedicated website
- address public meetings and generally be an ambassador for the campaign
- liaise with individuals and departments within the non-profit organisation to ensure that the results of the campaign – donations, offers of help, etc – are processed efficiently.

Training to be a charity campaign officer
Because of the nature of a campaign officer’s duties, training is usually ad-hoc, on-the-job and previous experience is highly valued. Off-site and online training courses are available to help with different aspects of the job from the various professional associations.
Salaries
The post is a high-profile job where experienced campaign officers typically receive £27,000 to £30,000. Junior campaign officers might receive a starting salary of £18,000 to £20,000.
Campaign officers progress to senior campaign officer, campaign co-ordinator or project manager with salaries dependent on success and experience. Frequently campaign officers are recruited for a fixed-term contract equivalent to the length of the campaign.
