Entry requirements

MBA

Anything from £3,000 to £40,000, depending on the reputation of the institution.

Ten months to two years full time, usually 12 months. Study may be full time, part time or distance learning.

  • A set number of core and elective courses.
  • A dissertation or project (this is often company-based).
  • Often, applicants are expected to be at least 24 years old.

Achievement of the Diploma in Management Studies usually counts as the first year in an MBA programme.

A good honours degree in any subject, plus significant organisational experience (usually minimum three years).

Diploma in Management Studies (DMS)

£1,800 to £2,000 per year.

Two years part time.

  • Six taught modules in the first year, leading to the award of a Certificate in Management.
  • Five modules and a work-based project in the second year.

This is a widely recognised management qualification. Students may proceed directly to master’s-level programmes, including the MBA and the MBA in International Business.

Degree plus one or two years’ work experience.

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Professional Qualification

Vary between study centres.

Three to four years, depending on study route.

  • Three learning streams: management accounting, business management and financial management.
  • Passing all exams and three years’ practical experience leads to qualification as a chartered management accountant.
  • Some relevant degree programmes and other qualifications allow students to skip some exams.
  • A relevant degree, eg in business or accounting, will gain you direct access, while other students can gain entry after completing the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting.
  • Relevant employment alongside study is recommended.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing

Around £200 per module.

One year part time.

  • Four modules assessed by examination.
  • Studies may be full time, part time or ’blended’ (through a series of online tutorials, face-to-face workshops and assignments).
  • There are also intensive residential courses held at the CIM Academy, and distance-learning courses.

Bachelor’s or master’s degree with syllabus coverage of the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing, or a non-marketing degree plus three years’ management experience to become an Affiliate Member (Studying) of the CIM.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Professional Development Scheme

£3,000 to £5,000.

One year full time, two years part time.

  • A mixture of exams and assignments.
  • A management report.
  • Continuing professional development.

Graduates can enter the scheme straight away, but some HR experience is considered useful.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Executive Diploma in Management

Around £1,350 for the course, plus individual college registration fees.

Usually two years, but up to six.

  • Work-based assignments.
  • Case study.
  • Examination.
  • Personal development portfolio analysis.

There is one possible route to an MBA, or business-related MA.

Candidates have to:

  • submit a questionnaire
  • face a panel interview
  • join the institute as a full member.
