ADD ADVICE TO FAVFunding your BVC
The course fees for the 2007–8 BVC intake ranged from £8,495 to £12,770. This is in addition to the Bar Council registration fee (about £300), and rent, food and living costs (£6,500 to £9,000). You will also have debts from your undergraduate degree and, if applicable, the CPE/GDL – these all add up. Plan your finances carefully, as your earnings may not be high in the early years.
Graduate loans
However, commercial banks tend to see potential barristers as a sound investment. Most of the major banks have graduate-loan packages tailored to the needs of the legal profession. Investigate the specific terms, as rates and repayment periods vary. It is also worth investigating the Career Development Loan and the availability of means-tested hardship funds and additional finance administered through your chosen institution.
Scholarships, grants and awards
In addition, roughly 25% of students receive some level of funding through the Inns of Court, who provide over £2m annually in support for the CPE/GDL and BVC. You must join an Inn prior to starting the BVC, and you can apply only to your chosen Inn for funding. Closing dates are around the beginning of November for BVC funding.
