Physiotherapists are employed in hospitals, private clinics and community practice.
What physiotherapists do
- assess the medical condition of patients
- write case histories and reports
- consider and apply appropriate treatment, involving physical contact and the application of massage, movement and other techniques
- use equipment such as lasers and ultrasound for the treatment of certain conditions
- advise on recuperative activities
- keep abreast of relevant literature
- work with other health professionals.

Training to be a physiotherapist
A three- or four-year degree course in physiotherapy is necessary, although there are two-year accelerated master’s courses for applicants with relevant degrees such as biological science, psychology and sports science. Part-time four-year degree courses are also available.
Pre-entry experience, as a physiotherapy assistant for example, is desirable. Successful applicants are eligible for means-tested bursaries and also have their fees paid for them.
Salaries for physiotherapists
Basic grade physiotherapists earn salaries in the range of about £19,000 to £25,000. Consultants earn around £33,000 to £73,000.
