Mining engineers manage mining, quarrying and tunnelling operations. Many work in countries other then the UK.
What mining engineers do
- assess the viability of extraction
- plan and manage mining, quarrying or tunnelling operations, and take into account the geometry of the mine in relation to the deposits of mineral-bearing ore
- take responsibility for all aspects of the mine’s operation in relation to health, safety and the environment within and beyond the mine
- assess, predict and plan for the effect of market volatility on viability.
Key skills
- technical knowledge to at least MEng level
- the ability to plan in the context of difficult resource and environmental issues, and to amend these plans in relation to volatile market situations
- teamworking and the ability to manage teams of specialists from a variety of backgrounds
- attention to detail, especially where safety is paramount.
Training to be a mining engineer
Initial training lasts for two years and includes all aspects of mining management as well as gaining statutory certificates or license to practise.
Salaries
Starting salaries vary in different parts of the world where mining engineers are employed. In the UK they are in the region of £20,000 to £25,000 but can reach over £40,000.
