Mineral engineers work in mineral processing plants, managing the extraction of minerals from ore.

What mineral engineers do

  • optimise production, reduce cost and waste
  • plan and implement equipment maintenance and upgrading
  • organise the disposal of treated ore.

Key skills

  • technical knowledge to at least MEng level
  • the ability to plan in the context of difficult resource and environmental issues, and to amend these plans in relation to volatile market situations
  • teamworking and the ability to manage teams of specialists from a variety of backgrounds
  • attention to detail, especially where safety is paramount.

Training to be a mineral engineer

Initial training usually lasts for two years. This covers all aspects of the plant and process.

Salaries

Starting salaries vary in different parts of the world where mining engineers are employed. In the UK they are in the region of £20,000 to £25,000 but can reach over £40,000.
