Electrical and electronic engineers work with power generating / transmission equipment and electronic circuits respectively. Both jobs are highly technical and have a strong focus on safety.

What electrical / electronic engineers do

  • design, develop, install, operate and maintain electricity power-generating equipment
  • design, assemble and test electronic circuits including optoelectronic and integrated circuits
  • assemble components to form electrical and electronic systems, ensuring compatibility and minimising electrical interference
  • design and install electronic systems that control high-voltage equipment
  • provide after-sales service, including helplines, for users who experience problems with equipment
  • maintain and repair equipment, changing components or printed circuit boards as appropriate.

Key skills

  • thorough knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, digital signal processing, telecommunications, optoelectronics and other relevant disciplines
  • analytical skills to follow logic of electronic circuits and interface with software
  • attention to detail
  • good verbal, written and diagrammatic communication
  • teamworking and advanced practical skills.

Training to be an electrical / electronic engineer

Employers will provide opportunities for professional development to help engineers to optimise the application of existing and emerging technologies, and to apply approximate methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems. Engineers usually achieve incorporated status within three to five years, and chartered status within four to six years.

Salaries

Salaries for trainees range from £20,000 to £26,000.
