Engineers who go into investment banking fill a wide variety of roles.

Back office

All banks make extensive use of computer networks and telecommunications and some engineers are employed in technology departments to develop new systems and maintain existing ones. Others work in operations where their concern is the process of making deals happen. Both require meticulous attention to detail.

Front office

Trading and sales are also attractive areas because there is an element of analytical work in addition to the persuasive sales aspect of these roles.

Those with a strong proficiency in high level mathematics, often with PhDs in engineering or physical sciences, can start as trainee analysts. They may work for fund managers or for traders, providing valuable information on the probable performance of specific investments.

Training in investment banking

Training is mostly on-the-job, but study is required to pass the regulatory exams for the Financial Services Authority. Some study to pass the exams that lead to the qualification of chartered investment analyst.

Graduate salaries

Starting salaries are in the range of £28,000 to £40,000.
