Animators create moving images through the filming of drawing-cells or models, or through using specialist software.

What animators do

  • present a brand, a concept or an emotion through a moving image
  • work on their own, or for companies involved in producing material for film, television, video/DVD, advertising, computer games, and the internet, in fact any area in which the embodiment of an idea through a moving image is required.

Key skills

  • drawing, modelling or computer-aided design
  • computer literacy and an interest in the latest developments in animation software
  • creativity
  • ability to interpret a brief, to liaise with the client and with other professionals involved in the project, and then to produce an animation which fulfils their (sometimes unstated) needs.

Training to be an animator

MAs in Animation are run by the Royal College of Art and by the National Film and Television School. Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design runs weekend courses in various animation skills.

Salaries

Starting salaries are between £12,000 and £15,000.

Senior animators with experience may earn £40,000 to £50,000, but much work in the industry is on short-term contract.
