Architects design new buildings and the spaces around them, as well as alterations to existing buildings.

What architects do

  • produce detailed workings and drawings – both manually and computer aided – to meet the needs of the client
  • manage projects working to tight specifications
  • prepare planning applications
  • ensure that any environmental damage caused by their project is limited
  • appraise and approve listed buildings and conservation areas.

  • organisational skills, especially the ability to juggle lots of projects at once

Training to be an architect

Architects train for a minimum of seven years. Graduates must follow an architecture degree approved by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) followed by two years’ work experience. This must be supplemented by the RIBA Professional Practice Examination.

Salaries

Salaries depend on the size of the practice and the requirements of the employer, but starting salaries are in the range of £15,000 to £23,000. Senior positions can attract salaries of up to £70,000.
